In a previous blog, we went over the typical insurance claim process that happens after a car accident and the kind of information you’ll need for your insurance. Once you’re ready for the car to be towed to an auto body shop for the inspection, however, what do you do? Unless your policy specifically states otherwise, you have the right to choose where to take your car for repairs. Most insurance companies will have a company-recommended list of local auto repair shops, but that does not mean you are limited to only those businesses.

While you have the choice, you should also be aware that there are some benefits to going to one of your insurance company’s preferred shops. For example:

  • It may require less paperwork if the insurance company already has an establish relationship with the auto body shop.
  • You might not have to wait as long to get confirmation on the shop and insurance agreeing to a price.

While these are advantages, you should always go to a shop you trust. The insurance company will not be driving the car after the accident, and you want to feel confident with the repairs made to your vehicle. In that case, peace of mind and quality work should be more important than simply going to a recommended shop for less paperwork/waiting. Either way, your insurance adjuster may want you to gather quotes from various shops of your choice.

Whether or not the shop you choose has an agreement with your insurance company, they will reach an agreed price for your claim; a.k.a., the price the insurance company agrees to pay and the shop agrees to accept.

If you are in a car accident, ask your insurance company for their recommended list of auto body shops. You should try to refer to your own preferred shop or one recommended by a friend to ensure quality service. Tell the adjuster where you plan to go, and they will reach an agreement with the auto body shop on pricing. Crossroad Collisions works with all insurance companies to reach a fair agreement on repair costs and will work efficiently to get you back on the road as soon as possible.
